Appraisals

Assigning a monetary value to artistic and historic objects is a separate professional activity from conservation. We suggest that you contact an expert in the field related to your item. A good place
to start is your local museum or historical society, as they can often refer you to an appropriate
specialist in your area.

The following organizations also offer advice and referrals:

Appraisers Association of America

The Appraisers Association of America, established in 1949, is the premier national association of personal property appraisers who focus on fine and decorative arts. With a membership of over 700 independent appraisers in 100 different areas of specialization, the AAA's roster of well-established professionals has the widest range of experience and expertise in their respective fields.

American Society of Appraisers

The American Society of Appraisers is an international organization of appraisal professionals and others interested in the appraisal profession. ASA is the oldest and only major appraisal organization representing all of the disciplines of appraisal specialists.

Christie's

Christie's is a name and place that speaks of extraordinary art, unparalleled service and expertise. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie's conducted the greatest auctions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and today remains a popular showcase for the unique and the beautiful. Christie's offers over 450 sales annually in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photographs, collectibles, wine, and more. With galleries in Boston and Marlborough, Mass., Skinner is a leading full-service auctioneer and appraiser of antiques and fine art. Skinner conducts auctions year-round in both locations. Sotheby's

Sotheby's Valuations and Estate Management Department can prepare valuations for property that has an auction market to suit a variety of needs. Fees for written valuations are quoted on a per specialist, per diem basis or a fixed fee and are based on the volume and nature of the property, as well as the amount of time and number of specialists required. Sotheby's will refund the fee pro rata should you consign any of the appraised property for sale within one year of the valuation date.
